On Love Part 2

ILLUSTRATION  ON  LOVE,  PART  II

There was a certain king who had three daughters.  One day, he called his first daughter and asked her whether she loved him. She confirmed that her love for her father is pure. She added that her father was the only focus of her love.  The father said he wanted to know in earnest the extent of her love for him.  Having confirmed, he allocated much riches to the first daughter. When he was through with her, he (the king) sent for the second daughter and demanded to know how much she loved him. Of course, she repeated exactly what the elder sister had confessed to their father. Their father was overwhelmed with happiness at this expression, and gave part of his wealth to her.

The unexpected and unthinkable happened when he called the third daughter to know the amount of her love for him. The third daughter told the father frankly that he had only one third of her love. She fearlessly told the father that her love was divided into three, and it was only one part out of the three that her father had. The king was astonished and consequently called her to give an explanation to what she meant by that. The explanation she gave was that one part of her love as his daughter is given to the father, another part to her husband and the third part to God; her creator. The king was so sand that he could not control his feelings. People advised the daughter to withdraw her statement but she refused. She emphasized that love was divided into categories, for different people, depending on the strength of the relationship.

According to her, there was a degree of love for the parents, another for the marital partner and another for God; the creator. She stressed that she did not know how to hide the truth. Having been convinced that she meant every bit of her word, the king was confused. He did not know exactly how to address the issue. He thought of what to do to the daughter, but at last the king resolved to give this girl to a man who was notorious for killing his wives.  The king’s evil machinations were that this girl would be killed the following day by the wicked man. This was a punitive measure by the father to his daughter for speaking the truth. If she had not told the father the plain truth, he would not have continued this evil against her.

The story is a long one, but for the sake of time, I will summarize it. The daughter was given in marriage to the wicked man. One day, the wicked man had a chat with his newly married wife.  The lady used that opportunity to tell the new husband stories. These stories thrilled her husband so much so that he forgot what he used to do to his former wives. They stayed awake all night and he lived with her for one day. This was the first time he married for one day without killing any of his unfortunate wives. The lady told the man that she had a lot of stories to tell and that if only he would not kill her the following day, she would narrate many thrilling stories to him.

The following day, the man did not kill her but compelled her to tell him the remaining stories. She kept telling him interesting stories in bits but not without the usual conclusion that she will continue if God preserved her life till the following day.

The man enjoyed the stories so much so that he was interested in getting all the series in detail. The wife narrated the stories every day and night, until he forgot the idea of killing her. And so, they lived happily without fear in the home, as husband and wife.  Having given her for marriage to this wife killer, the father thought that she must have been killed the night after the marriage. But this was not so since the couple were living happily in love and peace.  This was the time she actually gave out a part of her love to her husband.  It is pertinent to recall at this juncture that, before she became married, she had demanded the father to buy her a present during one of the times the king traveled. The king had bought her an empty brief-case. Ever since the father bought the brief-case for her, she has not opened to see the content. The father had forgotten about this third daughter soon after marriage unlike the case with the other two daughters whom he gave immense love and wealth. He has been buying things for them. They were living a magnificient and boastful lives as real princesses. But the third daughter was neglected and forgotten.  The usual belief was that she had long been killed.

One day, she had a message that her father was critically ill and that her attention was needed urgently. Because of the daughter-father relationship and the natural pity that she had for her father, she made up her mind to go and the other two daughters were also sent for surprisingly, the message could not get to them because their whereabouts were not known.  The rejected daughter stayed with the father and helped him in her little way. Later, she went back to her husband.

One day, as she was sitting in the house, something fell from the portmanteau; she opened it and discovered that it was filled with gold almost immediately; information came to her that the father had died. Even at this time, the whereabouts of the first and second daughters were yet not known. She hurried home and undertook the burial of the father, much better than what one thousand children would have done. She did everything she could go give the father a befitting burial because of the enormous love she had for her father.

Now, you must have realized that your claim of unlimited love for another person is false.  Rather, all you call love is infatuation. When the unexpected strikes you will run away and hide.
